There's no doubt about it: Job stress and health go hand in hand. Research by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicates that stress alone can influence physical maladies such as back problems, heart disease and ulcers.

  • Some studies suggest that jobs that are psychologically taxing and that allow employees little or no control over their work processes increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • NIOSH and other research indicate that job stress increases the risk for development of musculoskeletal disorders such as back and upper extremity difficulties.
  • Some studies propose that psychological disorders can come from stress. The differences in rates of mental health problems – like depression and "burnout" – for various occupations can be attributed to differences in job stress levels.
  • There are some studies that suggest that stressful working conditions interfere with safe work practices and can lead to injuries at work.
  • Other studies suggest there is a relationship between stressful working conditions and suicide, cancer, ulcers and impaired immune function.
