While it is important to stay fit, how can you
make fitness an important part of your day?
Chained to a desk at home doesn't afford you a lot of
opportunities to get in your workout at the gym. Here
are some things you can do to keep the blood flowing
at home and strategies for balancing your home life
with your work life.
Schedule a time for a workout. Make it as important as getting
up to stretch your legs or picking up the kids from school.
You can also split up your workout into sections. Do 10
minutes of running in place or other cardio activity before you
start work. Do 10 minutes at midday and do 10 minutes right
after you turn the computer off for the night.
You can also do minor muscle exercises while on the phone
if you have a hands-free headset. Consider getting up during
calls to do squats, tricep dips, lunges and wall push-ups.
Consider working while standing for a part of your day. It may
not be a cardio workout but it gets the blood flowing and gives
you a break from sitting.
If work prevents you from cooking those complicated sevencourse
dinners, cook and freeze large meals on the weekend
that you can eat during the week.
Stay organized by keeping paper off the desk as much as
possible. Buy a filing cabinet and keep it organized. Do not get
an "in-box" for your desk. That way all papers are immediately
filed when you're not working on them. Also, do not keep a
trashcan in your home office. Keep a paper bag for recyclable
paper and throw the rest in the place you would put the
household trash.
Make your workstation a play station as well. Put up pictures
or toys that remind you of fun, and don't be afraid to slip in a
PC video game for 10 minutes of down time.
