I Need Some UK Affiliate Updates

By Lisa Picarille

September 28th, 2007

If you’re like me and didn’t make it over to London for Ad:Tech and the first-ever Affiliate Summit London then you’re probably dying to know what’s been happening in the UK this week.

I haven’t heard or read a lot of updates. Even Affiliate Summit co-founder Shawn Collins, who is a prolific blogger and poster, hasn’t had any entries on either event. And I’ve only seen a scant few updates via twitter and on Facebook. Shawn and his co-founder, Missy Ward, must be crazy busy setting up the show, which takes place today.

Here’s the only blog I could find about Ad:Tech. If you’re at Ad:Tech London or the Affiliate Summit London and blogging about it, please, let me know.

Meanwhile, I just finished watching episode 6 of the Next Internet Millionaire. The first thing I noticed was that there was a warning prior to watching the show that it was PG and may not be suitable for all ages.

As far as I could pick up the only content not suitable for the young-ins was one F-bomb (bleeped out), someone giving the finger (blurred out) and a few scenes of the contestants at a local bar having drinks and cutting loose (this part was far too long). Pretty tame stuff.

The immunity challenge involved selling popsicles in 20 minutes before they melted and of course, generating the most cash possible from the sales. This challenge took place at a local Fort Collins, Colorado charity race. The winner managed to get $43.00 for their popsicles –winning by a large margin. The lesson, according to host Joel Comm “It never hurts to ask.”

Next, the contestants got a lesson from search engine guru Brad Fallon, who spoke about not doing everything yourself and how the less you do in your business the more successful you can be. Huh? I understand what he was trying to say, but I thought it was presented (edited maybe?) in such a way that it seemed unclear and jumbled at first to me.

The elimination challenge was for each of the teams to go to a garage sale. They had $20 and two hours to buy items to sell on eBay. One team opted to buy a bunch of Coca-Cola related items, while the other bought sports memorabilia, including action figurines.

The show ended without even showing which team won the challenge or a trip to the boardroom. I hate when that happens. I feel cheated.

Next week’s preview featured Kris Jones, CEO of PepperJam. I’ll tune in for that. Kris is a smart guy who knows his stuff when it comes to search.

However, I couldn’t agree more with the contestant that seemed frustrated at the lack of drama on the show. I hear ya.

    Hi Lisa,
Although the show helps create awareness of Internet Marketing, don’t you think having segments like selling popsicles kinda kills the image of internet marketers?

What’s next? Dumpster diving to simulate search engine algorithmns….?

    Sigh.

PS: I think Shawn will post a couple of London fog pictures soon (or maybe he just stood in front of his tailpipe and snapped away)

yeah, i see what you’re saying. i’m not sure about the eating worms in particular. i have an inbox piled high with messages and i can’t opt to eat something gross so i don’t have to respond or take action. i just have to deal with it. also, not sure the personal skills it takes to sell popsicles on the street are the same needed to be a good online marketer.

Thanks for the Shawn update. I want some kind of report.

And I recap I posted after all our US friends had gone to sleep: http://blog.affiliatesummit.com/2007/09/28/affiliate-summit-london-2007-keynote-presentation/

I didn’t get a chance to spend much time at ad:tech, but it looked good.

Sort of like NYC ad:tech with a fancier accent.

When I found out about this event it was too late.

O, well there’s always the next year.

    Doh!
