I finally finished watching the first episode of the Next Internet Millionaire. The production values were good and I really enjoyed the show, but it was just a little tame for me. However, I expect some backstabbing and nastiness to be on the way (Thor, I’m counting on you). I’ve viewed too many reality programs over the years and my threshold/desire for conflict on these show is pretty high.
I don’t have any early winner predictions for the Next Internet Millionaire, but no matter who is victorious the finale won’t be nearly as fun for me as other reality shows. For me, reality programming is a social event. My friends and I have a history of watching these types of show together.
For the last seven years I’ve hosted Survivor night at my place each Thursday – unless I’m sick or out of town. Granted the number of attendees has dwindled over the seasons. Still, there are some hardcore Survivor junkies that come over each week. Maybe they just like the fact that I provide great snacks and plenty of good wine, but I think they come because we have a fun time watching and analyzing each episode together (Thank goodness for TiVo). Also, for the finale we often have a pool picking the winner, which adds to the merriment.
In addition, I have a group of friends and do a similar thing at a friend’s house for Top Chef. Naturally, that evening always involves lots of cooking (or just eating) and wine. Its something I look forward to each week.
I’ll keep watching the Next Internet Millionaire, but I don’t expect to have guests over to huddle around my laptop and scrutinize each contestant and every task. And if that happens they better not get snack crumbs on my keyboard.

Sounds like fun, but how about adding the same group meetings on getting a college degree online as a group study while watching and discussing facts as the online course rolls.

“My name is Joel Comm, and I’ve made millions of dollars on the Internet.” Ugh.
“e-COMMerce chips” Double ugh.
This is totally corny. It took all my willpower and I still couldn’t get past the first half.

yeah, some things were corny, but try and find a reality program that doesn’t have its share of cheesiness. i’m going to keep watching and hope that like many other shows it hits a stride as it progresses.

Thanks for the mention! I hope I don’t let you down over the courseof the show.
The first two days were bland compared to what comes later. Don’t worry about drama. You will get it!

[…] As I type this blog entry I’m watching the second installment of the Next Internet Millionaire. I’m still not fully on board; not hooked. As I said before, there is just not enough backstabbing and controversy. […]
