The Collision of Marketing, TV and the Internet

By Lisa Picarille

August 17th, 2007

The first episode of the online-only marketing reality show The Next Internet Millionaire is now available to watch. I’ve only checked out about half of this first installment so far. There will be 12 total (a new one posted each week).

I’m planning on trying really hard to watch the show. But I have to confess that being viewable only online is a drawback for me. I noticed that it’s already taken me over an hour to watch 25 minutes because I’m at work and when I’m in front of my computer I tend to be distracted by other things – email, IM, Facebook, Twitter, Web surfing, real work. No matter how hard I try I just can’t sit still and watch any kind of video on my computer. However, I have no trouble watching anything on TV at home.

This show has several elements that really appeal to me – I’m a reality TV junkie (ok, that’s embarrassing) and I love the Internet and marketing. So, I’m really going to try and change my viewing habits to follow the show.

That said, I can’t seem to figure out how to rewind or fast forward the video. The only controls seem to be pause and play. That really doesn’t work for me since the browser window just closed and now it looks like I have to start the video all over again. I just don’t have another 25 minutes to get to the point in the video where I was before the stoppage. If that’ problem is not fixed it will certainly be a deal breaker for me - regardless of how compelling the show might be.

Be sure to let me know what you think of The Next Internet Millionaire and be on the look out for the Sept./Oct issue of Revenue where I do a Q&A with the show’s creator and co-producer Joel Comm.
