Shame on the Spider

By Lisa Picarille

July 18th, 2007

If you stopped by the Revenue booth at the Affiliate Summit in Miami you know we were passing out advance copies of the Web Crawler column written by the Spider. We were giving the column to those who filled out a qualification card for a free subscription to the magazine.

That Spider column will appear in the July-August issue of Revenue, which is on its way to you as I type this entry. What might have also noticed is that nearly a third of the column was about speculation related to who might be named the general manager at Commission Junction.

But what you also might know by now is that the day following the Summit CJ held a meeting with its advisory board in Miami and announced some high level executive changes. However, no new GM was named and several of the people the Spider speculated could be in the running for the general manager job were, in fact, named to other executive positions in the company. Tom Vadnais continues his role as GM of CJ. Vadnais was also not present at the event as the Spider predicted.

So, yes, as it turns out our intrepid Spider got it wrong. It happens. Hopefully not too often, but when you’re dealing with gossip, rumors and speculation things can change quickly (especially given our print deadlines). According to the Spider’s tipsters at the time, what was printed was the skinny at CJ. The Spider was simply reporting on what being speculated on within the walls of Commission Junction.

Okay, so no more excuses for the Spider. I just want to set the record straight. Here’s the real deal.

Commission Junction did not announced a new general manager. Instead, the company says its has divided executive responsibilities in its advertiser and publisher development teams into East and West regions (the Mississippi river is the dividing line). Dave Osman was named Vice President, Client Development – West, while Kerri Pollard is Vice President, Client Development – East.

[…] Back in July there was speculation surrounding who would be named general manager of the company. That was laid to rest when CJ made an official announcement that it would split some of the duties between Dave Duckwitz and Pollard, who recently left the Boston area to move closer to CJ’s headquarters in Santa Barbara, Calif.
