Revenue’s Affiliate Summit Recap

By Lisa Picarille

July 12th, 2007

I’m back in the office and still riding the high from the Affiliate Summit. I’m thrilled to be back in San Francisco where the humidity is less oppressive than Miami, but sad that the event is over.

Missy Ward and Shawn Collins do such a phenomenal job putting on the premiere conference of the affiliate space it’s no wonder that everyone is still buzzing about it long after it’s over.

If you’re already sick of reading my posts about the Affiliate Summit then stop now. However, if like me, you just can’t get enough recaps and coverage stick around, because I’ve still got plenty to say.

First, I was impressed that this time around there was a room dedicated to bloggers and press folks. That’s a true sign that the show is growing (over 1,800 attendees). Blogger extraordinaire and all-around good guy Jim Kukral was running the room and posting like crazy. I’m not sure the bottle of scotch was the best idea during the show, but Sam Harrelson and Brad Waller didn’t seem to mind. Besides, the posts were great and so was the webcam from the blogging room.

We also had a webcam in the Revenue booth and were streaming live. It was fantastic that people who couldn’t make it had a peek at the show floor. B. Knoblach (better known in the industry as Billy K.) was watching from Las Vegas and instant messaging us during the feed. You were there with us in spirit Billy.

For me the best part of the show is the quality of people that attend. Seeing old friends and making new ones is what Affiliate Summit is all about for me.

I finally met Jeremy Schoemaker (the legendary ShoeMoney) in person. Meeting someone face-to-face makes a huge difference in perception and I’m glad I had the chance to speak with him. Thanks to Kris Jones at Pepperjam for the introduction.

The ABestWeb.com crowd was out in full force at the Summit. I love those folks. What a cool group (and diverse) group of people. They are not shy about their opinions but I’ve really learned to respect and love that about them. Not only are they smart and generous, they are just downright fun to hang out with. I wanted to give a big shout out to Pat, Michael Coley, Danny K, Alan, Dale, Rexanne, Uncle Scooter (especially for bringing his lovely and delightful gal Judy) as well as the rest of the ABW folks at the Summit.

Speaking of having a posse…consultant (and Miami local) Andy Rodriguez and his team held a great seminar on Saturday about Affiliate Manager Best Practices. The packed all-day session yielded some helpful insight for me and all that attended. Thanks Andy, Emilio, Andy Junior and the rest of the ARC team.

And as always the ShareASale gang knows how to have a party (thanks to ABW for also sponsoring the “Party Under the Stars) and generate excitement. CEO Brian Littleton was Twittering once again and tickling the ivories to everyone’s delight. Meanwhile, Carolyn, Sarah, David and the rest of the crew were putting smiles on everyone’s faces with cool giveaways and their sunny demeanor at the booth. Those people truly love their jobs.

FlamingoWorld.com crew had some lucky mojo working for them. Queen Flamingo herself Connie Berg won a highly-desired iPhone from ShareASale, while Mike Kansa, who does operations and business development at FlamingoWorld.com, won a sweet video iPod during the Forex sponsored poolside party.

Whenever I spend anytime with Connie Berg I’m reminded how wonderful it is to see smart women at the top of their game. Coming from covering other industries that are male dominated (high-tech and sports) it’s always great to witness the abundance of smart and successful women at Affiliate Summit including our fabulous Affiliate Summit co-host Missy Ward, Anne Fognano (CleverMoms.com), Kim Rowley (Key Internet Marketing), Stephanie Agresta (Stephanie Agresta Consulting), Ros Gardner (author, super affiliate and Revenue columnist), Kristin Collier (MadHatterConsulting.com) Karen Garcia (Partner Centric), Stephanie Schwab (Converseon), Lisa Riolo (ex-CJ exec turned consultant), Deb Carney (Team Loxley), Heather Paulson (Paulson Management Group), Carolyn Tang (ShareASale) and so many, many more. Go girls.

Just a couple of other points and then I’ll stop gushing. I swear. Not sure if it was just me or what, but the staff working the event was truly friendly and helpful. It made for a very smooth show. On that note, thanks to Affiliate Summit staffer Amy Rodriguez. She’s one hard working lady.

Not sure if anyone else noticed but nearly ever person that I ran into to Performics was either having a baby or just had a baby. Is there something in the Chicago water? Congrats to all the new Performics parents. I think their party at the Shore Club was so fun because they were all used to functioning well with no sleep.

Great comments on the “women” of the affiliate industry. This was actually a question my wife asked me: “How many women are in the business?” and as I thought about it I was very impressed with the number and the high quality. Good overview of their importance in the industry.
