Sorry for the lag time in posting about the Web 2.0 Expo. I’ve got Mom 1.0 visiting for the week from the East Coast and in between the world of widgets and work there was a visit to wine country.
So, the Web 2.0 show held here in lovely San Francisco was teaming with people. There were more than 14,000 attendees and the level of buzz and excitement was infectious. I also spotted many folks reading Revenue Magazine (we were a media partner).
I ran into lots of former colleagues and people that I hadn’t seen in ages. Most had changed jobs and were now at their umpteenth startup. All of these folks had this glazed my-company-could-be-the-next-YouTube look in their eyes. Who am I to burst their collective bubbles? Not that I think this is a bubble (as in 2000 dotcom bubble) but not everyone is going to get a chunk of that Google money.
I was surprised at the lack of performance marketing and affiliate marketing folks. I expected more would attend the conference. During Tuesday’s keynote where John Battelle interviewed Google CEO Eric Schmidt I wondered how many in the jam-packed ballroom knew anything at all about Performics’ business when the DoubleClick/Google deal was discussed.
Eventually, I ran into a few online marketers (shout out to Stephanie Agresta) that were also very jazzed about how Web 2.0 fits with our space. Exciting times, my friend. Maybe that’s why Web 2.0 is the cover of the May/June issue of Revenue.
Next week it will be a different story here in SF. I’m anticipating a flood of online marketing and affiliate-types for Ad:Tech. I’m moderating a panel on Thursday, April 26 at 2:45pm. There are also some plans in the works for an affiliate gathering for drinks on Tuesday. Email me and I’ll clue you in on the deets.
Also at Ad:Tech, Shawn and I will be interviewing former Commission Junction executive turned consultant Lisa Riololive for our Affiliate Thing podcast.
And if you missed this week’s show it featured Jess Luthi, the online marketing maven of the UK. Listen here at WebMasterRadio.FM.
Let me know what you’re up to next week.

Hey Lisa! Great to see you at w2e. I just arrived back east yesterday. After I dig out, I will post my highlights from the show on my blog, InternetGeekGirl.com
I too was surprised at the lack of awareness about affiliate marketing. I will say that once I started talking to people about affiliate issues, they were all very interested. Major thumbs up to Revenue for representing at the show.
Enjoy Ad Tech!
All the best,
Stephanie Agresta
