It's an old saw that says "the money is in the list." It is as true now as it ever was, and it means that knowing how to grow your list effectively is key to making money online. There are literally dozens of ways of persuading prospective customers to sign up for an email list, but which ones really work?

A new report has the answers.

The graphic is pulled from a new MarketingSherpa report and it shows that the singles best tactic is to get people to sign up for newsletters while they are going through a purchase process.

Other tactics in descending order of usefulness include online events and webinars; website registration pages; paid search and offline events.

What's interesting about the research is the disparity in usage across industry sectors, with registration during purchase used heavily in the e-commerce sector while being used half as much in the finical services sector. It suggests that a little experimentation by marketers in which they attempted to adopt best practices from other sectors might pay dividends.
